The sugar maple is a deciduous native tree, which is an excellent shade tree, and its leaves are a national symbol of Canada.  Sugar maples are the trees tapped to make maple syrup.

  • Noteworthy Characteristics: A long-lived tree that grows relatively slowly, with a dense, rounded crown. In the fall, its leaves change colour to bright yellow, orange, or red. Its bark is gray and smooth at first, becoming darker and splitting into ridges that curl over time. Its seeds are contained in maple keys that are about 3 centimeters long.
