It has elliptic-shaped, simple, alternately arranged leaves with serrated margins. They are initially bronze-coloured, but mature to green. In the fall, the leaves turn yellow to red. The bark is thin and reddish-brown in colour. In the spring, the tree produces drooping, white clusters of flowers that are later replaced by round, fleshy, dark purple fruit. The fruit is edible.
