It grows well in loam, clay loam, or soil that contains rocky material. Noteworthy Characteristics: Redbud has heart-shaped, alternate leaves that are paler underneath. The bark is smooth and grey with some reddish colour but as it matures, it becomes scalier and reddish-brown. After about 5 years, pink flowers appear in the spring in clusters along the trunk and branches. They are similar in shape to pea flowers. The flowers are later replaced by flat, bean-like seedpods which contain 10-12 seeds each.
