Grow native plant habitats at home
What you can do
With COVID-19, we're all being challenged to stay inside and save lives around the world. Still, in Ontario, many native plants and animals are also at risk very close to home from habitat loss.
Right now, we see a real opportunity to rebuild natural habitats for local wildlife communities in our own backyards. And it's something everyone can do from home!
New from St. Williams Nursery & Ecology Centre this spring...
Plant native habitats for wildlife
Our ecologists have handpicked Ontario native plant species with you and nature in mind. We'll ship to directly to your home. You can order from three of Ontario's essential natural habitats:
- Forest Flora Habitat (Semi-shade)
- Upland Pollinator Habitat (Full-sun)
- Water's Edge Habitat (Moist-soil)
Each habitat will include 18 plants across 12-15 native species that support a variety of wildlife:
Boost your shady backyard biodiversity to support all kinds of wildlife–whether you’re near the woods or you have a few trees. This option includes beautiful blooms for we humans to enjoy too.
With these showy wildflowers, you can do your part to help to bring back our native bees and butterflies. These blooms are well suited for upland meadows and sunny garden patches.
Plant these hardy-yet-colourful florals and grasses in moist to wet soils. They’re great for wet spots, rainy weather, and gardeners with a tendency to overwater–but they’ll tough out almost any terrain.

About our native plants
Today, our native species biodiversity (read: natural variety of living things) in Ontario continues to decline at an alarming rate. That's why we need your help to restore and conserve healthy ecosystems, starting with your own backyard.
At St. Williams Nursery & Ecology Centre, we grow native plants using methods backed by conservation science. Our plants are 100% guaranteed to be grown:
- Locally, in-province.
- From source-identifed and verifiable seed.
- Without neonic pesticides that harm insects.
