Pinus strobus

White pine can be found in most of Ontario -- so much so that it’s the provincial tree of Ontario! It's able to grow quickly into a tall evergreen in full sunlight.

  • Height: 50-130 feet; 15-40 metres
  • Spread: 20-40 feet; 6-12 metres
  • Sun: Prefers full-sun in an area protected from strong winds, small trees can tolerate part-shade
  • Moisture: Medium
  • Soil: Tolerates a wide range of soil types, but prefers well-drained conditions
  • Tolerates: Rabbits and deer
  • Noteworthy characteristics: White pine has 6-12 cm long, skinny needles centimetres that grow in bunches of five. It produces cones are about 10-20 cm long that hang down from its branches. Its bark is dark gray-brown and it develops a distinctive, windswept form in maturity.
